Just One Night Review

I recieved this book as an advanced copy and though I did finish it before it's release on January 21st I'm just now getting around to posting the review so please forgive me.

You should sleep with a stranger, her best friend whispers in her ear as they take to Vegas for one last pre-wedding fling. Despite her best intentions, when Kasie Fitzgerald enters the casino and sees him, a man whose tailored clothes belied a powerful, even dangerous, presence, she loses herself to the moment. Maybe it’s the dress, much shorter than she’d ever normally wear, or the Scotch, but something makes her give herself over to him more completely than she's ever done with a man before.

It was supposed to be just one night. But right as she’s thinking she wants more, he shows up in her office with an agenda. As Mr. Dade, the billionaire CEO of a company that’s engaged her PR firm, his demands just became her reality...and he desires so much more than just some attention in the boardroom

Undercover Lovers #3: Naughty Cop

Before we get started I have big news. A friend of mine (the darling Kai Kiriyama) was accepted for publication by a Canadian Publishing House. I am so excited to read her Blaze Tuesday novel (as should you all) and the second I have more information I'll let you know.

And I guess that put me in a naustalgic mood because I pulled out an old half-developed manuscript dated back to 2007! I want to type it out (it's in an old notebook) so it's at least on my hard drive if I ever want to come back to it. Won't be anytime soon but it's good to keep my options open.

As there's no Castle on tonight (sad face) I'm putting together a post for friday that talks about Castle. I'm excited to be doing more writing and I'm slowly getting organized enough to not stress about it.

So Kai, I'm so proud of you! You totally earned publication.

That also means I've got to catch up on this writing business thing so watch out.

High Fantasy According to Ciara Ballintyne

A little while ago (actually not that long but this sounds more interesting) I messaged a certain writer of high fantasy because frankly I had no idea what that genre was. I understand the basic concept of the fantasy genre in comparison to other genres but I mean there are so many different subgenres nowadays it's so hard to keep them straight (and I wanted to see how many times I could say 'genre' in a paragraph).

And so, ladies and gentlemen of the Madame's Company, the lovely and talented Ciara Ballintyne has graciously agreed to sit down with me and talk about High Fantasy.

Ready? Let's dive.

Ciara Ballintyne is a writer of high fantasy, lawyer, and dragon expert. Bent on world domination and born argumentative, Ciara invested her natural inclinations in a career in law. Her short story, A Magical Melody, is available as part of the Spells: Ten Tales of Magic ebook anthology.

18 Things on My Bucket List

Tomorrow is the official release day of '18 Things' by Jamie Ayres!

18 Things

Can eighteen things save a life? Olga Gay Worontzoff thinks her biggest problems are an awful name (after her grandmothers of course) and not attending prom with Conner, her best friend and secret crush since kindergarten. Then Conner is killed in a freak accident and Olga feels responsible. The sarcastic, nerdy girl who never missed a day of school is suddenly lost and unable to deal with the emotional pain. When she downs an entire bottle of pain pills, her parents force her into counseling. There, her therapist writes a prescription in the form of a life list titled 18 Things. Eighteen quests to complete the year of her eighteenth birthday.

Olga enlists the help of her friends and becomes a catalyst for healing in their own lives as they eagerly offer suggestions. All she has to do is fire-walk, try out for the cheerleading squad, break a world record, and err . . . go on her first date. Good thing Nate, a new hottie in town, enters her life with perfect timing. He brings the fun factor to her list and helps her discover the beauty and strength inside herself, then complicates things by falling in love with her. Maybe it’s time to put into practice the lessons her list has taught her. Just as she’s finally embracing the joys of YOLO, her therapist reveals a big secret and Olga’s world is shaken.

In the past year it took eighteen remarkable things to change a life, but nothing she believed about her mission is true. Now she doesn’t just risk losing her true soul-mate forever, she risks losing her very soul. There’s only one thing she knows for certain. Her choice will affect their future for all eternity.

Undercover Lovers #2: Business Meeting

Week two of the undercover lovers series. I am going to keep working on this until...well I have it planned up to April but we'll see how it goes. However last week my darling editor at Just Write!Ink sent me a review of the first ten pages of my WIP. It's not much but I think it was nice for me to get a second opinion and maybe some encouragement. Anyways, she expressed interest in reading more.

...I don't have more. So that's something I'm going to be working on as well. On top of all the other things in my life that require writing and/or bleeding onto a typewriter. I'm not stressed what are you talking about?

Undercover Lovers: Comic-Con

This is the first story in my new weekly series known as "Undercover Lovers". It follows a couple (Rick Castle and Kate Beckett) as they find themselves in various undercover situations whether it's for work, when they're out with friends or when they're in the comfort of their own home. Originally these were just fan fics for the TV Series 'Castle' but I think maybe I'll use this as a tool to work on my character development and story skills. So that means I would love any feedback you have for me.

And speaking of feedback I am slowly working on a collaborative project that will definitely need your assistance so be on the look out for that in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, Kate and Rick find themselves in the middle of New York Comic-Con on the hunt of a suspect. Check it out:

Aversion by Kenechi Udogu

Aversion came out last month and I got my hands on it just so I could share it with you guys - aren't I nice?. Check it out:

For Gemma Green’s first time, things should have been straightforward. Find your subject, hold their gaze and push a thought into their head to save them from future disaster – Aversion complete. A pretty simple process given that the subject was to have no recollection of the experience. But Russ Tannerdoesn’t seem to want to forget. In fact the more she tries to avoid him, the more he pushes to get to know her. Gemma knows she has a problem but is she facing the side effects of a failed Aversion or has the school’s tennis champ really fallen for her?

Genre: YA Fantasy

Excerpt:
At first Russ looked mortified at my question but he broke into slightly nervous laughter when he saw a smile tugging away at the corner of my lips. Why couldn’t I have kept a straight face when I said that?
When he finally stopped laughing, he picked up the menu again and resumed playing with it. “I have always noticed you, Gemma. You probably don’t remember the few times we spoke…”
“We’ve never spoken…” I began to protest but he cut me short.
“Last year on that field trip to see the War Memorial in Yates, you asked me to move over so you could get to your seat.”
I stared at him in disbelief. “That doesn’t count.”
“Well, there was that time you couldn’t reach a library book and I helped you get it. That was last year as well.”
My mouth almost dropped open in shock. Those moments were barely memorable. I would never have counted them as mentionable in any conversation. It almost sounded like he…no, it wasn’t impossible. Russ Tanner did not have a crush on me. This verbal diarrhoea had to be a result of whatever it was I did to him. I could sense that he thought he was telling the truth but surely he couldn’t be. Why would he notice me? And I was not thinking that in an ‘I’m-a-nobody-and-I-feel-sorry-for-myself’ way. I was a social nobody but I knew I wasn’t unattractive. I had caught boys looking at me even before I turned twelve and informed Dad that I needed a bra, so it couldn’t just be my chest they were looking at. But I was nowhere near as pretty as some of the girls he hung out with. I didn’t wear makeup like most of them did (lip balm did not count) but I allowed myself the little vanity of stud earrings and ensuring my hair was as healthy looking as it could be. Maybe Russ had a thing for pretty hair and silver studs.
“I wish you’d stop looking at me like that. Like I’m talking a load of nonsense,” Russ’s tone was convincingly hurt and I almost felt bad for him. But I had to remember what was happening here and try to gently steer him away from me.
“Look Russ, I know you think you want to be my friend but I assure you, this won’t work. We don’t have the same type of friends…what am I saying, I have no friends and we both know yours will not like me. If for some unimaginable reason I decide to hang out with you some other day, the only way we can talk in peace is by meeting up in places like this, where no one will know us. Do you really want that? What are you going to say to your friends when they ask where you’ve been? I don’t know how else to convince you that us,” I pointed at the both of us, “isn’t practical.”
“I don’t want practical. I want you.”
I don’t think he intended to say those words out loud because he gasped at the same moment I did and then he turned an unnatural shade of red. This was way more serious than I had thought and I had no clue what to say in response to his unexpected confession. Whatever I had messed up had to be fixed fast.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aversion is the first in the Mentalist series following six months of the life of Gemma Greene, a girl with the ability to sway someone's mind and prevent them from steering off the track their life is meant to take. Her life is laid out for her from birth to death until she averts the mind of Russ, one of the popular kids in her high school who suddenly has a strange attraction to her. From then on her life becomes one of secrets and surprises - growing from a simple high school romance to a deadly conspiracy that threatens to change Gemma's fate forever.
The novella starts out with about three or four pages of pure background. When I first started reading it I thought it was so useless - and honestly it kind of bugged me but around the half way mark of the book, patterns started to emerge in her writing that made me go "ohhhhhh, I get it". One thing that worried me was the voice. Kenechi is writing from the perspective of a fifteen year old girl. I thought she nailed it to be honest. There were word choices here and there that I had to stop and reread in my teenage voice but it was very well written.
The plot itself was quite mind blowing. I was geared up from a will they-won't they-forbidden teenage romance and it turned around and became this full blown conspiracy that encompassed her and dragged her romance into the middle without warning. I like being surprised. It was a good kind of twist that I didn't see coming.
I am anxiously awaiting the second book in there series.
